چکیده

In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the importance of riparian buffers between agricultural fields and waterbodies. Riparian buffers play an important role in mitigating the impacts of land use activities on water quality and aquatic ecosystems. However, evaluating the effectiveness of riparian buffer systems on a watershed scale is complex, and watershed models have limited capabilities for simulating riparian buffer processes. Thus, the overall objective of this paper is to develop an understanding of riparian buffer processes towards water quality modelling/monitoring and nonpoint source pollution assessment. The paper provides a thorough review of relevant literature on the performance of vegetative buffers on sediment reduction. It was found that although sediment trapping capacities are siteand vegetation-specific, and many factors influence the sediment trapping efficiency, the width of a buffer is important in filtering agricultural runoff and wider buffers tended to trap more sediment. Sediment trapping efficiency is also affected by slope, but the overall relationship is not consistent among studies. Overall, sediment trapping efficiency did not vary by vegetation type and grass buffers and forest buffers have roughly the same sediment trapping efficiency. This analysis can be used as the basis for planning future studies on watershed scale simulation of riparian buffer systems, design of effective riparian buffers for nonpoint source pollution control or water quality restoration and design of riparian buffer monitoring programs in watersheds. Major factors influencing the efficacy of vegetated buffers on sediment trapping: a review and analysis.

Sediment is a major agricultural pollutant threatening water quality. Vegetated buffers, including vegetative filter strips, riparian buffers, and grassed waterways, are best management practices (BMPs) installed in many areas to filter sediments from tailwaters, and deter sediment transport to water bodies. Along with reducing sediment transport, the filters also help trap sediment bound nutri...

Effectiveness of variable-width buffer design for sediment reduction

Vegetative buffer strips are vegetated areas (usually strips) between fields and waterbodies that can mitigate the effects of agricultural activities by acting as a physical barrier to sediment and nutrients being carried to streams, and thereby have been widely used as a best management practice (BMP). Buffers can slow surface water flow and allow greater water infiltration, trapping the sedim...

A design aid for sizing filter strips using buffer area ratio

Nonuniform field runoff can reduce the effectiveness of filter strips that are a uniform size along a field margin. Effectiveness can be improved by placing more filter strip where the runoff load is greater and less where the load is smaller. A modeling analysis was conducted of the relationship between pollutant trapping efficiency and the ratio of filter strip area to upslope contributing ar...

The performance of vegetative filter strips is governed by complex mechanisms. Models can help simulate the field conditions and predict the buffer effectiveness. A single event model for simulating the hydrology and sediment filtration in buffer strips is developed and field tested. Input parameters, sensitivity analysis, calibration and field testing of the model are presented. The model was ...

Empirical Relation for Prediction of Sediment-Trapping Coefficient in the Experimental Flume of the Stepped Slit Check Dams

Eroded sediments from catchment areas transport by streams and deposit in downstream less steep areas. Despite reducing the useful life of various hydraulic structures including reservoir dams, flood walls, and bridges, this phenomenon changes the main river hydraulic conditions and increases the flood prone farms in the riverbank area. Check dams are among the structures that can prevent form ...
